Kansas City Chiefs trading QB Alex Smith to Redskins

The Washington Redskins are pegging their future on Alex Smith via the first blockbuster trade of 2018.

The Redskins and Kansas City Chiefs reached an agreement in principle Tuesday to trade Smith to Washington for cornerback Kendall Fuller and a 2018 third-round draft pick, a source informed of the situation told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport. The trade, according to Rapoport, cannot be finalized until the new league year begins on March 14.

As part of the agreement, the Redskins are giving Smith a four-year contract extension worth $94 million with a whopping $71 million guaranteed for injury, sources told Rapoport and NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. In combination with his previous deal, Smith is under contract for five years at $111 million, per Rapoport.

While the Redskins ultimately landed Smith, the Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals engaged in trade talks with the Chiefs, too, Rapoport reported.

The Kansas City Star first reported the trade agreement.

With Smith set to be the Redskins’ new starting quarterback, Kirk Cousins will test the free agency waters for the first time of his career. Cousins, who has passed for more than 16,000 yards with the Redskins since 2012, has played the last two seasons under the franchise tag and could potentially become the highest-paid player in NFL history.

“Few players in recent history have meant more to the Chiefs franchise and the Kansas City community than Derrick Johnson,” Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in a statement. “His tireless work ethic and passion for the game made him one of the most productive defensive players to ever wear a Chiefs uniform and one of the most respected players both in our locker room and around the league. Over the last 13 seasons, Derrick represented himself and the Chiefs organization with integrity and class, and he will always be a part of our Chiefs family.”

The 35-year-old Johnson spent his entire 13-year career in K.C. after being drafted with the No. 15 overall pick in the 2005 draft. Johnson earned four Pro Bowl bids and is the Chiefs’ all-time leading tackler with 1,262 takedowns. He also added 27.5 sacks and 14 interceptions.

“I’ve been blessed to be a part of the Kansas City Chiefs organization my entire career,” Johnson said. “I’d like to thank the Hunt family, my coaches, teammates and the staff for the tremendous amount of support I received over the years. I love Kansas City and this fan base, they’ve always had my back. I’m grateful I had the opportunity to spend 13 years in a place I love.

Revis was involved in two of the second half’s critical plays. First, the 32-year-old corner was the one who batted Marcus Mariota’s goal-line throw back to the Titans QB for a touchdown. But the lasting image of Revis in K.C. will be his lackluster effort on Tennessee’s game-sealing third-down conversion, a 22-yard scamper by Derrick Henry.

Revis was made expendable by Kansas City’s recent trade of Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, for whom the Chiefs received up-and-coming corner Kendall Fuller jersey. Fuller likely will start across from All-Pro cornerback Marcus Peters in 2018.

What the future holds in store for Revis is up to him. The great mercenary looked to glide into retirement with his pockets fat and without interruption this season until Kansas City called him in late November. But now that he is owed nothing by either the Jets or the Chiefs — Revis won’t receive the $10 million owed to him at the start of the 2018 league year — might the potential four-time All-Pro give it another go for a well-paying contender?
